A Semi-longitudinal Study on Physical Growth and Development and Nutritional Status of Teenagers in an Urban Area


Abstract
This study was carried out to know physical growth and development, physical and nutritional indices and so forth by semi-longitudinal research method. The subject of study were 386 persons (male; 165, female. 221) who are living in Soo-Won city and were born from March, 1 in 1973 to February 28 in 1974 and grew up until the third grade of high school.
The results are as follows
1. Physical growth and Development
Body height grew one-step direct-development and body weight, chest-girth and sitting height grew two-step direct-development. Female excelled male in two-step development.
The age of cross over between both sexes was between 7.0 to 14.5 in body height, between 9.0 to 15.5 in, body weight, between 11 to 15.5 in chest girth and between 7.0 to 15.5 years in sitting height. During this periods, female excelled male but after the periods, male excelled female again.
2. Physical and nutritional indices
In all cases of relative body weight, relative chest-girth and relative sitting height, they were found to be increasing thereafter with advancing ages.
The age of cross over between both sexes was between 9.5 to 14.5 years in relative body weight, after 12.5 in relative chest-girth and between 12.5 to 15.5 in relative sitting height. During this periods, female excelled male but after the periods, male excelled female again.
Rohrer index and kaup index reached normal conditions as the age increase. Verveack and Pelidisi index reached normal conditions as the age increase.
